Annual Glacial Lake Grantsburg Water Management Plan Listening Session
Date: 03/09/2023
Time: 5:30 p.m. - End of Agenda
Location: In-Person & Virtual Options; See Details for Information
Cody Strong, Cody.strong@wisconsin.gov or 715-416-4166
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will hold a public listening session for the proposed Annual Glacial Lake Grantsburg Water Management Plan on March 9 at the Grantsburg Public High School as part of the public review and comment period.
The primary management actions used as part of the management plan on the Glacial Lake Grantsburg property to maintain, restore, and enhance the quality and extent of open wetlands that benefit wildlife species are water level manipulations and land management.
The Glacial Lake Grantsburg property includes Crex Meadows Wildlife Area, Fish Lake and Amsterdam Sloughs, all of which are vital contributors to the preservation of oak/pine barrens, a rare and globally imperiled natural community, in the Northwest Sands Ecological Landscape.
These properties provide hunting, trapping, gathering, wildlife watching and educational opportunities. The abundance and diversity of wildlife, including rare bird species that inhabit this landscape, attracts an international audience who appreciate not only the wildlife, but also the grand scale of wetlands and oak/pine barrens found here.
This listening session is an additional opportunity for anyone interested in providing input on the proposed plan. The public review and comment period remains open until March 16.
Participants are encouraged to register via the Zoom registration link, even if they plan to attend in person. Registration closes at noon CST on March 8.
Registrants will speak in the order in which they’ve signed up, and each speaker will have three minutes. The Annual Water Management Plan is available on the DNR’s Public Input Opportunities webpage for review prior to the listening session.
Pursuant to standard listening session format, DNR staff will give a brief overview of management actions to date, provide plans for 2023, discuss long-term goals for Crex Meadows Wildlife Area and other Glacial Lake Grantsburg properties, followed by the public comment session.

St. Croix Special Well Casing Depth Area (SWCDA) – Junkers Landfill Update
Date: 03/08/2023
Time: 5:30 p.m. - End of Agenda
Location: In-Person & Virtual Options; See Details for Information
Dave Rozeboom, David.Rozeboom@wisconsin.gov
The informational meeting will include updates from the DNR and Department of Health Services (DHS). Topics covered will include a brief history of the contamination affecting the area, an overview of the areas included within the SWCDA, and a change to the funding status of the Junker Landfill portion of the SWCDA.
The SWCDA is an area within the towns of Hudson and Warren where comingled plumes of contamination from three nearby sites caused drinking water wells to become contaminated with trichloroethylene (TCE). The comingled groundwater plume encompasses approximately six square miles (4,000 acres). Approximately 600 private drinking water wells are located within this area.
The Junkers Landfill plume in the central portion of the SWCDA has a responsible party (RP) group that entered into a consent decree with the state of Wisconsin in 1997. The DNR has overseen investigation and mitigation activities at this site since 1984. RP funding for the Junkers Landfill portion of the SWCDA (under the Junker Landfill Remediation Trust or LRT), established under the 1997 consent decrees and used to install and maintain the granular activated carbon (GAC) filtration systems, ceased at the end of 2022. As a result, the LRT no longer has the funding available to maintain or sample the filtration systems that are currently installed at properties in the Junkers Landfill area of the SWCDA. Effective September 30, 2023, private well owners within the Junkers Landfill portion of the St. Croix SWCDA that have filtration systems will become financially responsible for maintaining the systems.
Participants are strongly encouraged to submit questions in advance through email at DNRStCroixSWCDA@wisconsin.gov.
The meeting information, agenda, and additional information on the SWCDA is available on the DNR’s St. Croix SWCDA – Towns of Hudson and Warren Special Well Casing Depth Area webpage.
