Wildlife Management Changes at Sandhill Wildlife Area
Date: 10/06/2021
Time: 5:45 p.m. - End of Agenda
Location: Pittsville School District Administration Building, 5459 Elementary Ave. - Auditorium
Meggin Weinandt, Meggin.Weinandt@wisconsin.gov or 715-315-0056
Since 2003, Sandhill Wildlife Area has operated under a game farm license in accordance with state statute. Following the terms of this license, the DNR has maintained a perimeter fence around the property, creating unique recreational opportunities for the public.
However, while chronic wasting disease (CWD) has not yet been found in any Sandhill deer, it has been found in Wood County deer. If the disease were to be found on the property, Sandhill would be required by state statute to implement a biosecurity plan that would negatively affect public use and management on the property.
In the interest of the public’s continued enjoyment of Sandhill Wildlife Area, the department has elected to relinquish its game farm license. As part of this process, the DNR will follow all DATCP regulations for decommissioning a game farm.
This includes depopulating the deer herd within the existing fence and then removing the fence itself. The DNR will hold a public information session to answer questions on the decommissioning of the Sandhill Wildlife Area’s game farm license and future property management.
