Cooperative Watershed Management And Restoration - Road/Stream Crossing | Forest-Wide | Cumulatively, roads pose the most significant threat and cause the most ongoing damage to watersheds and water resources on the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. This project will conduct a road and trail stream crossing inventory on the national forest to enable crossing risk assessment and prioritization for replacement. Groundwater And Geological Resource Inventory And Investigations | Bayfield, Taylor, Price | Conduct groundwater and geological resource inventories and investigations of identified groundwater/surface water management issues within the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest (CNNF). |

Hazardous Fuels Reduction | Lakewood-Laona District | Treat, manipulate, or remove hazardous fuels on the National Forest in order to pose less of a threat to local communities, infrastructure, and forest resources in the event of a wildfire. Insect and Disease Survey | Forest-Wide | Restore CNNF lands that have been impacted through insect and disease through early detection and swift management. Forest Health Assessment Surveys will assist with early detection and identify the extent of a particular outbreak if one were to occur. Insects or diseases of concern include emerald ash borer, heterobasidion root disease, and oak wilt. Common Stand Exams | Forest-Wide | Conduct stand exams across national forest annually. The purpose is to obtain the site, setting and tree characteristics required to identify stand conditions and capabilities and provide the CNNF with information to make management determinations for natural resources including silvicultural treatment. Seasonal Restoration Fieldwork | Forest-Wide | Expand restoration project capacity on the Chequamegon – Nicolet National Forest to complete additive work that would not be accomplished without GNA funding. These activities would promote additional timber stand resiliency, improve wildlife habitat, and reduce the threat of invasive species that harm those resources. This will help sustain production of forest resources, maintain soil productivity through soil erosion reduction, and improve water quality. Wetland and Stream Mapping | Forest-Wide | Road, trail, and timber management actives on the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest continue to impact streams and wetlands that are unmapped or incorrectly mapped. A protocol has recently been developed by the Wisconsin DNR for updating the Wisconsin Wetland Inventory and streams databases across the state utilizing LiDAR data. Following this protocol, all lands within the CNNF boundary would be mapped over the next 5 years. Wildlife Opening and Trail Maintenance | Forest-Wide | Perform level one road, trail, and wildlife opening maintenance on the CNNF. The results of the activity will be promoting/maintaining an open vegetative condition used by wildlife on established forest opening across the CNNF, in addition to providing efficient road systems for use and management. Wildlife Species Of Concern Surveys | Forest-Wide | Conduct annual American Marten, Bald/Eagle/Osprey/Great Blue Heron and small mammal surveys on the national forest. Surveys will provide knowledge of the presence, absence and occupation of nest/den sites to improve management of these sensitive species on the CNNF land base.
