Continuing education for drillers and pump installers
License and registration credentials expire on December 31 and must be renewed annually to retain active status into the next calendar year. Attendance at six credit-hours of DNR approved continuing education is required each calendar year before eligibility is granted for renewal. Training sessions attended for continuing education cannot be repeated for credit within a 3-year period.
DNR approved in-person training is posted to an interactive calendar at the following link: Approved Training Event Calendar. A listing of approved on-demand training is available here: Online Driller/Pump Installer Training.
Training providers must report attendance within 10 business days of completion when training has been pre-approved for continuing education credit by the DNR. A driller or pump installer who attends training that is not pre-approved by the DNR will need to report attendance using Form 3300-190. See Form 3300-190 Training Report Instruction for more information. Further details are provided in the sections that follow.
Information for drillers, pump installers and rig operators
Licensed driller and pump installer requirements
Driller and pump installer licenses expire on December 31 each year. Licenses must be renewed on or before December 31 to retain active status into the next calendar year. To be eligible for renewal, six hours of attendance at pre-approved training must be completed by the licensee each calendar year for each license that is to be renewed. Continuing education attendance is not required for renewal eligibility during the first calendar year in which an individual is issued a license for the first time.
With the exception of the first year that a license is issued for the first time, failure to fulfill continuing education attendance requirements by December 31 will result in license expiration without renewal eligibility. When an individual’s license expires without renewal eligibility, a passing score on the license exam is needed to reinstate the license.
Registered drilling rig operator CE requirements
Drilling rig operator registrations expire on December 31 each year. Registrations must be renewed on or before December 31 to retain active status into the next calendar year. To be eligible for renewal, six hours of attendance at pre-approved training must be completed by the registrant each calendar year for each rig operator registration that is to be renewed. Continuing education attendance is not required for renewal eligibility during the first calendar year that a rig operator registration is issued for the first time. Note that attendance and registration renewal are required in the first calendar year that a registration is issued if a rig operator intends to apply for a driller license and allocate drilling experience from the first calendar year towards license application requirements of NR 146.04(2)(a & b) and NR 146.04(9)(a).
Failure to fulfill calendar year continuing education requirements by December 31 will result in registration expiration without renewal eligibility. When an individual’s registration expires without renewal eligibility, the individual must reapply for rig operator registration in the following year.
Pre-approved continuing education
Continuing education providers apply for approval of training that is to be offered within a calendar year. Training is reviewed and “pre-approved” by the DNR for driller and pump installer continuing education credit. The provider of pre-approved training will report attendance to the DNR within 10 business days of completion.
Pre-approved on-demand training for the current calendar year is listed with training provider contact information at the following link:

Training attendance required for renewal eligibility
An individual licensee or registrant must have six credit-hours of continuing education attendance allocated to each license and registration that is to be renewed before the renewal can be processed. One credit-hour will be in code compliance related training and three credit-hours in training specific to the license or registration held. The remaining two credit-hours may come from attendance at other approved trainings that are not specific to the license or registration held. See the table below:

Driller and pump installer frequently asked questions
How do I contact the DNR when I have continuing education related questions?
Send inquiries by email to: DNRDGCONTINUINGEDUCATION@wisconsin.gov.
What is a "calendar year"?
A calendar year is a one-year period beginning on January 1 and ending on December 31.
Who is responsible for reporting continuing education attendance to the DNR?
The provider is responsible for reporting attendance when training has been pre-approved for Wisconsin continuing education credit. Drillers and pump installers report attendance using Form 3300-190 if training was not pre-approved. See Form 3300-190 Training Report Instruction for more information.
What is “pre-approved” continuing education?
Training is “pre-approved” when submitted to the DNR for review and approved by the DNR for pump installer and driller continuing education credit. The number of credit-hours available by license and registration type is designated in an approval letter to the training provider. The provider of pre-approved continuing education will make a training agenda available to all attendees. The agenda will include the number of approved credits available by license type.
Where can I view training that has been pre-approved for Wisconsin continuing education credit?
Pre-approved training available on-demand is listed at the following link:
Online Driller/Pump Installer Training
Pre-approved training available in-person is listed on an interactive calendar at the following link:

Where can I view continuing education attendance that is on record with the DNR for the current calendar year?
Current calendar year attendance data that has been reported to the DNR and allocated to the DNR database can be accessed at the following link:
Continuing education attendance status portal
When I complete online continuing education, is the attendance immediately allocated to the DNR’s database?
When continuing education is completed online, attendance data is not immediately transferred to the DNR database. The attendance data is emailed by the online training provider to the DNR in an attendance report. The attendance report may be received by the DNR one day to one month following training completion, depending on the training provider. The attendance report is uploaded to a database and processed by the DNR. Once DNR processing is completed, the attendee can access their attendance data through the online portal at the following link:
Continuing education attendance status portal
I attended training, but my attendance is not listed at the DNR’s continuing education status portal. Who should I contact to have this resolved?
Providers of pre-approved continuing education should report attendance to the DNR within 10 days of completion. Some providers take much longer to report attendance. If the training was pre-approved, contact the training provider to see if the attendance has been reported to the DNR. If the training was not pre-approved and you have reported the attendance on Form 3300-190, allow 10 business days following submittal for the attendance to be reviewed, approved and uploaded to the DNR database.
I attended training that was not pre-approved by the DNR. How do I receive credit for attending this training?
Report attendance at training that is not pre-approved to the DNR using Form 3300-190. See Form 3300-190 Training Report Instruction for more information.
I am trying to renew my license online, but I get a message saying that I don’t have enough continuing education credits to renew. I completed the required continuing education. Why am I getting this message?
Check the number of credits that are on record at the DNR by using the Continuing Education Attendance Status Portal:
Continuing education attendance status portal
If your attendance is not listed, contact the continuing education provider and ask them to report your attendance to the DNR. If your attendance has been reported and is not listed, contact the DNR by email: DNRDGCONTINUINGEDUCATION@wisconsin.gov.
Information for continuing education training providers
Continuing education application and attendance reporting
Training providers use Form 3300-322 to apply for continuing education approval. A guide to completing this application is available here: Form 3300-322 Training Provider Application Instruction.
Report training attendance within 10 business days of completion using the following form: Training Attendance Spreadsheet [XLS]. See the Training Attendance Spreadsheet Instruction for guidance.
Entries into application form fields and attendance data submitted on the Training Attendance Spreadsheet are uploaded to a DNR database. Incomplete or incorrect application and attendance submittals are purged during the upload process. Incomplete or incorrect applications will cause delays in processing as forms are returned for correction and resubmittal.
A Training Attendee Log Sheet is available to providers and training attendees to record attendance at in-person training events. Use of this form is optional. Log sheets should not be used to report attendance to the DNR. Transfer log sheet entries to the Training Attendance Spreadsheet [XLS] before submitting attendance to the DNR.
