Wisconsin Community Tree Map
The Wisconsin Community Tree Map is a mapping application that enables users to identify and assess community trees. With its ability to filter different tree attributes, such as species and diameter, as well as determine trees' environmental benefits, this application is both an educational tool and an important instrument in the decision-making process related to your community's urban forest.
Tree inventories are records kept by organizations to identify trees and track management activities in the urban forest. Over 200 organizations have tree inventories in the tree map, amounting to over 1,000,000 trees.
Navigation
Click on a community in the legend to see that community's trees or click "Show All Trees" to see all of the trees currently uploaded across the state. Then click a tree to see its name, diameter at breast height (DBH), address and inventory date. Users can also click on Eco-Benefits to see an approximation of the tree's annual value, or click on Street View for a car's perspective of the tree (note that it only applies to street trees and this service is not available everywhere).
Filtering
To identify specific groups of trees, click on the "Advanced Filter" icon at the bottom of the toolbar on the left side of the map. Tree attributes appear which you can select and customize in order to explore a subset of the urban forest. For example, to find large, healthy ash trees, click "Good" or "Excellent" under Condition, “Ash” under Genus, and then start the range at 10” under Diameter (in.).
For a more extensive review of advanced filtering options, please watch Plan-It Geo's training video [exit DNR].
Statistics, graphs and ecosystem benefits
To examine urban forest statistics, or to create charts, graphs and reports based on the urban forest data, click on “Hub” in the upper left, then “Stats”. Ecosystem benefits are also identified and described under this section.
For a more extensive review of these tools and features, please watch Plan-It Geo's training video [exit DNR].
FAQ
- There are more trees in my community than what is displayed. Where are they?
- This map is composed mostly of the public trees for which the local authority (typically municipalities) has an active management role. These are often those maintained along streets or in parks.
- Do I have to download any software?
- No, the mapping application is browser-based, meaning that it will open in your internet browser (e.g., Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox). For best performance, use Google Chrome.
- Why can't I upload or edit tree data?
- At this time, only DNR staff and some municipalities have log-in access to add, remove or edit tree data. However, all users can filter tree attributes, create charts and graphs and assess ecosystem benefits. Schools can acquire free accounts if used for educational purposes. If you are an educator wishing to use an account, please request one from DNRUrbanForestryAssessment@Wisconsin.gov.
- Where can I learn more about the Tree Plotter software?
- More detailed information about Tree Plotter is available on Plan-It Geo’s website [exit DNR].
Submissions
If your community has a tree inventory that you would like to submit for inclusion in the statewide database, please contact DNRUrbanForestryAssessment@Wisconsin.gov. Please note that grant recipients that conduct an urban tree inventory using Urban Forestry grant dollars are required to submit a copy of their completed inventory to the DNR.
For those communities with an inventory already in the WCTM, inventory handouts [PDF] are available that summarize your community's managed trees. Contact the DNR for your summary.

Disclaimer
Tree data comes from disparate sources of differing breadth and quality. While all attempts were made to use as much available data as possible, some communities' data had to be abridged, altered or abandoned to best fit into a consistent database appropriate for the whole state.
