Remote Camping on DNR Lands

There are a limited number of opportunities for very primitive, remote camping on DNR lands that are not associated with a campground and do not require a reservation fee. These non-reservable sites or areas are not regularly maintained and may require the user to obtain a special permit.

Singular remote sites or areas are often located on lakes and rivers and are only accessible by watercraft. Remote primitive backpack camping is allowed using the existing permit system on some northern forest properties. Permittees obtain a permit and then hike-in at least one mile to the camping location. No vehicles or trailers are allowed.  

Many of these camping opportunities will specify where you can park, as part of a permit or reservation process. In other cases, campers should follow guidelines for overnight parking on DNR lands.
