NR 812 rule changes

The rule change to provide for the use of Type IL cement in the grouting and sealing of wells was approved by the Wisconsin Natural Resources Board on May 17, 2023, and became effective on Nov. 1, 2023.

Ch. NR 812, Wis. Adm. Code last underwent a comprehensive revision of Subchapter III focusing on pump installation in 1991. Industry standards, technology and practices have since evolved, necessitating an update to the regulatory framework to reflect current technology and best management practices for pump installation and related well construction activities. The proposed rulemaking will clarify existing requirements and address industry practices not clearly articulated in the code. Revisions will provide a consistent framework for the regulated community to deliver service to their customers while maintaining and improving Wisconsin’s groundwater resources.

The Natural Resources Board approved Scope Statement DG-03-23 at its meeting on Sept. 20, 2023.

The department has formed an advisory committee and begun consulting with industry partners and other stakeholders to identify issues and areas for review and revision that fall within the boundaries of the approved Scope Statement.
