DNR To Host Free Learning Sessions For Local Governments On Redevelopment

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) today announced it will host learning sessions on redevelopment of properties known as brownfields. Local government officials and others interested in learning more about brownfield redevelopment in Wisconsin are encouraged to attend.

The sessions are free to attend, and the same content will be covered at each session.

• Nov. 12: The Innovation Center (1221 Innovation Drive, Whitewater), 10 a.m. - noon
• Nov. 15: Health and Human Services Building (303 W. Chapel Street, Dodgeville), 11:15 a.m. - 1:15 p.m.
• Nov. 20: City Hall Community Room (127 S. Sawyer Street, Shawano), 10 a.m. - noon

A brownfield is a property with the potential for redevelopment, but its reuse is complicated by real or perceived contamination in the soil or groundwater. Brownfields can be found in many locations and vary in size, age and past use.    

The in-person learning sessions will share information about resources available to local governments to redevelop brownfield properties into community assets. Participants will learn how to identify brownfield sites in their community and understand the liability considerations and due diligence required when acquiring brownfield properties.

Highlights of the sessions include an overview of funding and other assistance available to support redevelopment efforts. Representatives from the DNR and Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation will be on-site to answer questions about brownfield properties and redevelopment.

“The redevelopment of brownfield properties can support broader community development efforts,” said Jodie Thistle, manager of the Brownfield, Policy and Outreach Section in the Remediation and Redevelopment Program at the DNR. “We invite local government officials and others involved in development projects to attend the sessions to learn how the resources and assistance from the DNR can help support their efforts.”
