Farmers: Applying Manure? Check The Runoff Risk Advisory Forecast First
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) are reminding farmers and manure applicators to check the runoff risk advisory forecast before spreading manure this summer.
The runoff risk advisory forecast is an online tool showing maps for short-term runoff risk for manure application. The maps account for soil saturation, temperature and precipitation on a scale of 1.5 square-mile grids. The National Weather Service updates the forecast four times daily. Using the tool can help farmers avoid spreading manure when the risk of runoff is high.
Hauling manure between hayfield harvesting requires special attention. Even low application rates of surface-applied liquid manure can run off with a summer rainstorm.
Surface applications need to be done with caution to avoid manure runoff into waterways. Check before you spread, use the runoff risk advisory forecast and local weather forecast. Hold off on surface applications if rain is coming.
Accidents can happen. If runoff or a spill occurs, take immediate action to contain manure and prevent downstream impacts. Report all manure spills or runoff affecting water to the DNR's 24-hour emergency spills hotline at 800-943-0003. More information about planning and prevention is available on the DNR website.
The weather this year has been very challenging for farmers and crop growers. The DNR and DATCP thank you for doing your part to reduce risk of agricultural runoff into Wisconsin’s waterways.
