MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) today announced that the winter issue of Wisconsin Natural Resources magazine is now available in print and online. Wisconsin winters can be wonderful, and the latest issue will help you embrace the fun.

Activities such as snowshoeing, sledding and winter camping get the cover treatment in the winter edition, along with fat-tire biking hot spots and a look at snowmobile/ATV/UTV safety this season. There’s also a story on the Kettle Moraine State Forest-Lapham Peak Unit, which tackles the uncertainties of climate change by making its own snow for ski trails.

For an update on wildlife, check out magazine stories on elk-tracking technology, the symbiotic relationship between salamander mussels and mudpuppies, and a look at the interesting way some herptiles overwinter – including frogs that freeze solid. Bird lovers will find tips on looking for snowy owls and other owl species in winter, plus a “recipe” for suet to help feed our feathered friends.

Ice fishing fact vs. fiction” helps dispel some of the myths surrounding this Wisconsin winter tradition, encouraging those new to the sport to give it a try. And a DIY piece on how to make your own fishing lures will help even experienced anglers get ready for warmer-weather outings.

The Safe Drinking Water Act marks its 50th anniversary this year, and the magazine’s “Back in the Day” feature focuses on the positive impact of this important federal legislation. And there’s much more in this issue to help you embrace winter in Wisconsin!

We’re also asking for feedback on the magazine as part of a quick survey. Readers and nonreaders alike can take a moment to let us know what they think on the survey webpage.
