Girl Scouts Love State Parks 2022 (Day 2 of 2)

Food Truck and Kayaking—10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Summer is winding down, but there’s still time to try out kayaks or paddleboards, grab some delicious food, and participate in some family-friendly activities at Lakeshore State Park. Join DNR staff in learning about the eggs and life cycle of the Park’s many wildlife species or meet a fox snake! Provided activities include aerobies and water sports curtesy of Milwaukee Kayak Company. Single person kayaks, paddleboards, and canoes will be available, as well as paddles and life jackets. All paddlers must be 12 years of age or older to paddle and must submit a waiver prior to launch. Bring a kite, picnic blanket, camping chairs, and enjoy some time out in the park! Event will be set up in the big lawn area across from pebble beach.

Scouts Service Project: Protecting Pollinators and Pollinator Gardens - 9:30-11 a.m. Kids’ Prairie

Pollinators are a very important part of the forest ecosystem and need our help! Learn about pollinator species, native plants, and the remarkable relationship between them. Then, help us to tend to our pollinator flower garden with some late-season planting, weeding, and other maintenance!

This activity will start with a 20-30 minute introduction to pollinators, safety instructions, and descriptions of the goals for the day. Bring water, sunblock, and appropriate gardening clothes! Work gloves will be provided. Important: gardening/ hand tools will be used for this event. Meet at Kids’ Prairie, across from Pebble Beach in the middle of the park. (Also counts towards Brownies’ Bugs badge and Juniors’ Flowers badge.)

Make and Toss Seed Bombs: Drop-In Event between Noon and 2 p.m. Kids’ Prairie

Native wildflowers and grasses benefit our community in many ways! Come learn how native plants help people and the environment. Then collect seeds from prairie plants to make into a seed bomb. Then do an act of service by tossing your seed bomb into Lakeshore State Park’s Big Prarie, the part of the park most in need of repopulation with native Wisconsin plants. Instructions will be provided for Scouts, friends and families to make their own seed bombs at home. Meet at Kids’ Prairie, across from Pebble Beach in the middle of the park. (Also counts towards Juniors’ Flowers badge).

Numbers in Nature: The Fibonacci Sequence in Flowers – 3-4:30 p.m. Kids Prairie

Have you ever noticed how many plants have spirals? Come learn the secrets of nature’s beautiful “golden spirals.” Observe them in Lakeshore State Park’s plants, count seeds and leaves in spirals then make your own golden spiral. (Also counts toward Brownies and Juniors’ Numbers in Nature badge.) Meet at Kids’ Prairie, across from Pebble Beach in the middle of the park.
