Dr. Scott Hull is the Director of the Office of Applied Science. He has over 20 years of state fish and wildlife agency experience in both management and research. Scott started his professional career in 1998 as a Wildlife Research Biologist with the Ohio DNR-Division of Wildlife where he worked on a variety of gamebird projects. He moved back to his home state of Wisconsin in 2006 taking on the role of Wisconsin DNR Upland Wildlife Ecologist & Farm Bill Policy Coordinator in the Bureau of Wildlife Management. He then moved on to a series of roles with the Bureau of Science Services including Research Scientist, Wildlife Research Team Leader and Section Chief. Hull earned his Ph.D. in Zoology from Ohio State University in 2002.  

 

David M. MacFarland, Ph.D.

Dr. David MacFarland is the Wildlife Research Team Leader in the Office of Applied Science. David has been with the Wisconsin DNR for 10 years, working as the Carnivore Research Scientist and Large Carnivore Specialist before his current leadership position. He holds a B.S. from Messiah College and an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. David’s primary research interests are focused on the population and spatial ecology of carnivores.

 

Greg G. Sass, Ph.D.

Dr. Greg Sass is the Fisheries Research Team Leader with the Office of Applied Science. He has been with the Wisconsin DNR for about nine years. Greg earned his B.S. in Biology from the University of South Florida in 1999 and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2001 and 2004, respectively. Greg’s research focuses on applied fisheries management and ecology, ecosystem-based fisheries management, whole-lake studies and aquatic ecology.

 

Together, Scott, David and Greg oversee the researchers and research conducted at all four of our research stations throughout the state: The Science Operations Center in Madison, the Northern Wildlife Research Station in Rhinelander, the Northern Highland Fisheries Research Area in Boulder Junction and the DNR Service Center in Spooner.
