Hiking

Several trails meander through various parts of the park, offering flat to rolling topography for hikers. The park's 2.5-mile main road is also popular with walkers and runners. Please help preserve the park's resources and prevent erosion by staying on designated trails and stairways.

Hiking trails

Big Pines Nature trail (0.75 miles)

The Big Pines Nature Trail offers rolling topography as well as an educational experience for park users of all ages. This trail is also used by many visitors to access the beach from the campground.

Blue trail (0.65 miles)

The Blue trail goes around and through the Krueger Pines State Natural Area. The Natural Area was established in 1953 as a classic example of old-growth white pine. In 1983 this area was dedicated to Senator Clifford "Tiny" Krueger a leading conservationist and advocate of Natural Resource programs.

Brown trail (0.8 miles)

The Brown trail runs parallel with Council Grounds Drive, through mixed hardwoods. The north end of the trail connects to the Merrill Area Recreation Complex trail system. The south end of the trail goes to the picnic area on the Wisconsin River.

Green trail (0.6 miles)

The Green trail meanders near marshy lowland forest and upland forest to the scenic Wisconsin River.

Northwest trail (1.5 miles)

The Northwest Trail begins near the entrance station and loops through meadows and stands of hemlock, red pine, spruce and mixed hardwoods.
