Biking

Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest

Except for the Fallison, Trout Lake, Star Lake and Tom Robert's trails, biking is allowed on all other roads and trails. This amounts to hundreds of miles of biking opportunities.

Designated mountain bike trails require a state trail pass, which can be purchased by self-registering at the trail heads. Trails designated for biking are the McNaughton, Madeline and Raven trails.

There are three trails on or near the forest that have suitable surfaces for all bikes. The Bearskin State Trail has trailheads in Minocqua and on Highway K near State Highway 51. There is a paved trail in the southern part of the forest that connects the Clear Lake Day Use Area to Indian Mounds Campground, which crosses Clear Lake Campground entrance along the way. The surrounding area towns also maintain a paved bike trail that runs from Mercer to St. Germain, passing near Big, Upper Gresham, Jag Group, North Trout, South Trout, Firefly, Crystal, Musky and Plum Lake campgrounds.
