Vermillion River Extensive Wildlife Habitat Area

vermillion.jpg

Vermillion River Extensive Wildlife Habitat Area is a 120-acre property located in Barron County. Find it by going south of Cumberland on Highway P for 1 mile, then turn east on Highway T and follow this for 4.25 miles. The property is southeast of the intersection of Highway T and 9th Street. The Vermillion River, with a cattail and sedge marsh, runs through the property. Adjacent prairie grass fields are managed for waterfowl and grassland bird nesting.

With the topography and woody brush that follows the edge of the Vermillion River and prairies, this area offers excellent pheasant hunting and wildlife viewing. Located right along HWY T, this property is very easy to access. This area is ideal for visitors who enjoy going for quick hikes and/or watching birds. Even though at a glance it looks like an open landscape, exploring further will show there is a lot of cover and topography along the river corridor. This allows for deer and other animals to hide and use this property often.

Management Objectives

The property was purchased through the Extensive Wildlife Habitat Area program in the 1980s. Prairie grasses were planted on the adjacent fields. These fields are periodically mowed to maintain waterfowl and upland bird nesting habitat.
