Green Bay West Shores Wildlife Area

View of GBWS Tibbet Unit grassland and woods.

The Tibbet-Suamico Unit is a 308-acre property located one mile east of Little Suamico along the south side of Lade Beach Road and west of Rost Road in Oconto County. The area is comprised of shrub-carr, mature hardwoods (basswoods and maples), aspen and swamp hardwoods (black ash). The shoreline consists mainly of emergent and hemi marsh. The property has recreation opportunities for migrant bird watching as well as hunting and trapping. One formal parking area is available.

Management Objective

The Tibbet-Suamico Unit was established in 1994. Additional land was acquired in 2005. The property is popular for upland game and deer hunting. Waterfowlers hunt the bay. Timber sales on the unit have maintained and enhanced habitat for forest wildlife and regenerated aspen. Control of invasive species in the wetlands is an ongoing activity.
