Rush Point Unit
Green Bay West Shores Wildlife Area
The Rush Point Unit is approximately 386 acres located along County Highway Y north of Oconto. It has a variety of habitat types following gradient changes from open water and coastal marsh along the shore of Green Bay to mature bottomland hardwoods. Lowland brush communities occur throughout the area along with scattered stands of aspen. The Rush Point Unit is located on the south end of the 10,000-acre County Line Swamp. It is part of an Important Bird Area [exit DNR] due to its use by both breeding and migrating birds. Numerous wetlands and watercourses within the Rush Point Unit contribute to the health of the Green Bay ecosystem.
Management Objective
The Rush Point Unit was established in 1962. Some of the land within the unit was historically farmed but high-water tables and poor soil make this a less conducive land use and more suitable to native habitat. Acquisition is continuing as land and resources are available.
Today, forest management through timber sales is conducted on the unit. Control of invasive species in the wetlands is a continuing activity in this and other units of the Green Bay West Shore Wildlife Area. The property has no specific parking lots but roadside access and walk-in access via easements are possible from three sides.
