Pensaukee Unit

Green Bay West Shores Wildlife Area

GBWS Pensaukee

Pensaukee Unit is a 515-acre property located in Oconto County. It is located on both sides of County Highway S immediately south of Pensaukee. East of the highway, there is a large coastal marsh with sedges and emergent vegetation, some shrub wetlands, and a native grass field. Oak ridges and swamp hardwoods are interspersed with marsh and shrub wetlands on the west side of the highway. Hunting is the prevalent use here including periodic release of reared Day-Old Chick pheasants by a local conservation club.

History of Management

The Pensaukee Unit was established in 1956. Potholes for waterfowl use were developed in the coastal marsh along the shore of Green Bay. Dredge spoil islands off the wildlife area were important breeding areas for Green Bay colonial nesting birds during high water years but recent low water levels have reduced the use of these areas.

Management Objective

The native grasses have been managed through the use of prescribed fire to provide nesting cover. Timber sales on the unit have maintained and enhanced habitat for forest wildlife. A recent project to remove dredge spoils from the marsh will create better conditions for fish spawning and waterfowl. Mowing operations and invasive species treatments are planned for the future to enhance habitat quality.
