Green Bay West Shores Wildlife Area
Long Tail Point is one of three geographically unique natural sand-spit features on the west shores of Green Bay providing 434 acres of habitat, recreation area, and an interesting glimpse of early American history with the remnants of a lighthouse. The habitat types on the point are dependent on the level of water in Green Bay. Habitat types are a gradient from open water to emergent wetlands, sedge meadows, shrub-carr, sand beaches, and cottonwood coppices. The area inside Long Tail Point is called Dead Horse Bay. This area is known for fishing access in all seasons as well as hunting and observation of migrating birds.
The property is located at the east end of Riverside Drive in Suamico, south of the Suamico River in Brown County, but is better accessed from Harbor Lights Road. Parcels of state-owned land are also located along Longtail Beach Road and Lane. The point is State-owned land. Two parking lots and a kayak/boat launch are provided.
Management Objective
The Long Tail Point Unit became a wildlife refuge in 1936. The refuge was terminated in 1961 and the land was turned over to the state. Currently, a State Wildlife Refuge protects nesting birds when signed. More land was acquired in 1999 and 2002. This unit is a very important stopover area for migrating waterfowl. Fish management activities are conducted around Long Tail and it is an access point to Green Bay for fishermen. Recent management has focused on controlling the invasive species. As part of the Lower Green Bay and Fox River Area of Concern, the area will also have habitat restorations and enhancements in the coming years.
