The Niebauer Springs Fishery Area was initially purchased to develop and maintain a brook trout fishery. In addition to this use, timber and wildlife species are considered viable objectives to better utilize the recreational potential of this area. As part of its management, camping, outboard motor, snowmobile and off-road vehicle use will be prohibited.

Niebauer Springs Fishery Area covers 206 acres and includes a 13.1-acre impounded spring pond, two spring feeder streams, the outlet stream, and 2,640 feet of frontage on the South Fork of the Flambeau River. The Flambeau River flows into the Chippewa River and ultimately into the Mississippi River.

Location/Directions

The Niebauer Springs Fishery Fishery Area is located in Price County approximately 8 miles northwest of Phillips. From County Hwy F, turn west onto Chase Road then north on River Road to the drive leading to a parking lot.

Angling opportunities

Fish species known to be present in Niebauer Springs include brook trout, black bullheads, common shiners, creek chubs and white suckers.

The South Fork of the Flambeau River has a fish population consisting of muskellunge, northern pike, walleye, smallmouth bass, channel catfish, black crappie, rock sturgeon, largemouth bass, bluegill, perch, rock bass, pumpkinseed, and black, brown and yellow bullheads. Non-game fish include redhorse, white sucker, burbot, creek chub, common shiner and hog sucker. The South Fork of the Flambeau is stocked with smallmouth bass and muskellunge.

Objective

Niebauer Springs Fishery Fishery Area is managed to provide for an acceptable, intensively managed trout fishery and other recreational activities, and to economically utilize the forest resources.
